BRANDON, Manitoba: Did you know that November is Financial Literacy Month? C. Buhler & Associates Ltd., a Canadian insolvency agency headquartered in Brandon, Manitoba, believes that financial education is the biggest key to helping people understand and stay out of debt.

When Crystal Buhler, owner of C. Buhler & Associates Ltd., started her own firm in 2018, she already had a background in financial services. She’d been an accountant, as well as a Chartered Insolvency and Restructuring Professional (CIRP) and Licensed Insolvency Trustee (LIT) for both small and large firms for many years. What powered her vision for her own firm was all of the individuals she personally connected with over the years – all Canadians struggling with financial debt.

“I think everyone needs a little direction to reach their destination,” says Buhler. “I enjoy providing guidance to help people consider all of their options and make an educated decision about their financial future.” C. Buhler & Associates Ltd.’s professional team also includes a business manager and two insolvency managers, all of whom believe, like Buhler herself, in empowering clients to take control of their debt in a non-judgmental manner.

The first step is helping clients understand their debt and the options available to them. According to Statistics Canada (2019), almost one-third of Canadians believe they have too much debt. Financial education can help people avoid debt in the first place. It can also help them understand debt management options, like consolidation and consumer proposals, before filing for bankruptcy becomes the only option.

For these reasons, Crystal Buhler is a major proponent of Financial Literacy Month. “Dealing with debt is an important piece of financial literacy,” she says, adding that her agency does a push on social media during November to share resources from the federal government and beyond, in hopes of educating consumers.
